Joanna Caplan is an actress, theatre artist and arts educator. She is a graduate of Montreal’s Dawson College Professional Theatre Program and holds a combined honours degree in Contemporary Studies and International Development Studies from the University of King’s College in Halifax. Joanna was a resident artist and company member of Double Edge Theatre in Massachusetts from 2011-2016. From 2011-13 she developed her solo-show Total Verrückt! while based at Double Edge. Total Verrückt! premiered at The Charlestown Working Theater in Boston in May 2013 and had its Canadian premiere at the Island Fringe Festival in Prince Edward Island in August 2013. Since its premiere, the show has toured to Detroit, New Orleans, Baltimore, Toronto and Los Angeles. In addition to her work as a solo-performer, Joanna has performed with the Double Edge Ensemble since 2013 in their indoor/outdoor traveling spectacles. In 2016 Joanna left Double Edge to embark on a research trip to India where she trained in the martial art Kalaripayattu, as well as in the performance practice Ottanthullal, both forms originating in the Indian state of Kerala. Joanna currently resides in Toronto where she is pursuing film, television and commercial acting work.
